The Focus of Our Efforts

Stable Moments®
Preparations are underway to begin our 2025-2026 Stable Moments Program. We are looking for mentors who are willing to spend one hour a week changing the life of a foster kid. You will need to complete an online training that takes about 2 hours and at least one half day onsite training with our horses. No prior horse experience is required. After you are trained, you will need to be able to prioritize one hour each week for your mentee.
Our Stable Moments program is a weekly, nine-month program for children who have had any history in the child welfare system. Developmental trauma is a common experience for these children, resulting from their history of being in foster care and any preceding traumatic events. Trauma in childhood affects the development of essential life skills, such as self-esteem, responsibility, self-regulation, emotional awareness, healthy relationships, and independence. The mentor-horse partnership offers consistency, stability, and safety, which allow the child to learn these skills in a unique way. The horses, as herd-bound prey animals, constantly assess their surroundings for danger, much like a child who has experienced trauma. By observing and communing with the horses, the children learn to feel safe and develop critical thinking skills. The mentor sessions are tailored to the individual child's plan of care, targeting essential life skill deficits, and building on the previous sessions to foster a healthy and productive member of society. Through this program, children learn how to receive unconditional love, communicate and exist without judgment, and gain mutual respect while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
